That is easy to forget, because it looks like a force tool, lives in a case and takes a beating. But the day an inspector asks for proof that the flange was tightened to the right value, nobody looks at the tool. They look at its <strong>calibration certificate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is when to have a tool calibrated, what the certificate must contain, and why the record is often worth more than the certificate itself.<\/p>\n<h2>Calibration or verification? One reality, two words<\/h2>\n<p>In the field everyone says calibration. Strictly, calibration means comparing what the tool shows against a reference standard and recording the deviation. When the deviation exceeds tolerance, the tool is adjusted, then measured again.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction matters in a report: a tool described as calibrated, with no document, proves nothing. A tool calibrated with a dated certificate proves something.<\/p>\n<h2>How often should a tool be calibrated?<\/h2>\n<p>There is no single answer, and be wary of anyone who gives you one. Frequency depends on four things.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What your client or general contractor requires.<\/strong> On regulated sites and petrochemical shutdowns, the requirement is often contractual and outranks everything else.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Intensity of use.<\/strong> A tool running daily drifts faster than one used three times a year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conditions.<\/strong> Impacts, drops, freezing, abrasive dust, pressure washing: each of these is grounds for immediate verification, whatever the calendar says.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How critical the assembly is.<\/strong> A pressure joint does not carry the same requirement as a platform bolt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most widespread industry marker remains an <strong>annual cycle<\/strong>, tightened according to use and triggered off-calendar whenever an event justifies it. Many of our clients line up their shop visit with the preparation of their <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/industrial-bolting-the-4-keys-to-a-successful-maintenance-shutdown\/\">maintenance shutdowns<\/a>, in spring and in fall. It makes sense: the tool is idle anyway, and it leaves certified for the season.<\/p>\n<h2>Signs a tool should go back to the shop right away<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was dropped, or something was dropped on it.<\/li>\n<li>The gauge was replaced, or its needle no longer returns cleanly to zero.<\/li>\n<li>Results vary from bolt to bolt with no apparent mechanical reason.<\/li>\n<li>A hydraulic leak, unusual play, a new noise.<\/li>\n<li>You can no longer find the certificate. On paper, a tool without documentation is an uncalibrated tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What the certificate must contain<\/h2>\n<p>A useful certificate identifies the tool and makes the measurement verifiable. Expect to find:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>unique identification of the tool \u2014 model and serial number;<\/li>\n<li>the calibration date, and who performed it;<\/li>\n<li>the measurement points covered across the range, with values recorded before and after adjustment;<\/li>\n<li>the deviation found and the tolerance applied;<\/li>\n<li>traceability of the reference standard used;<\/li>\n<li>the associated pressure gauge, when the tool is hydraulic \u2014 tool and gauge form one set.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That last point is the one most often skipped. Calibrating the tool and then reading its pressure on an unknown gauge is measuring with a ruler nobody checked. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/technical-data-sheets\/\">tool&#8217;s torque chart<\/a> only becomes usable once both are confirmed.<\/p>\n<h2>The record: what remains when the certificate is lost<\/h2>\n<p>Certificates get lost. Records do not. Keeping a tool&#8217;s full history \u2014 every visit, every deviation measured, every part replaced \u2014 gives you two things a single certificate cannot.<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>an immediate answer in an audit<\/strong> or a dispute over past work. Second, <strong>a drift curve<\/strong>: a tool that strays a little further at every visit announces its failure before it happens in the middle of a shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we keep the calibration record of every tool that enters our Longueuil shop, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/online-torque-rental\/\">rental<\/a> tools.
