You set a <strong>pressure<\/strong>. The torque chart shipped with the tool is what bridges the two: so many psi at the pump produce so many foot-pounds at the head.<\/p>\n<p>That small table is one of the most consulted documents in our technical library, and one of the most misread. Here is how to read it properly, and why it is worth nothing without a calibrated gauge.<\/p>\n<h2>What a torque chart actually says<\/h2>\n<p>A chart belongs to <strong>one specific tool model<\/strong>. Same family, different capacity, and the curve changes. For each supply pressure, it gives the theoretical output torque of that tool, under reference conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Three words carry the weight in that sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>That tool.<\/strong> The AVANTI 3 chart does not apply to an AVANTI 5, an MXT or an ICE. Check the model printed at the top of the table before anything else.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Theoretical.<\/strong> This is the expected output of a tool in good condition, not the torque actually transmitted to the bolt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reference conditions.<\/strong> Thread friction, surface condition and the lubricant used decide how much of that torque becomes real tension in the bolt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Reading a line, in order<\/h2>\n<p>The method is four steps, always the same ones.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Start from the target torque<\/strong>, not from the pressure. The target comes from your project engineering or from the equipment manufacturer&#8217;s procedure, never from the chart itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Confirm model and unit.<\/strong> Foot-pounds and newton-metres look alike in a narrow column, and a factor of 1.356 separates them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find the matching line<\/strong> and read the pressure. If your torque falls between two lines, do not interpolate by eye: the relationship is linear on most tools, but the ends of the range are not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check that you are inside the tool&#8217;s useful range.<\/strong> Working at the very bottom or the very top of the range degrades accuracy. A smaller or larger tool will give a better result.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>The five mistakes we see most often<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Using another model&#8217;s chart<\/strong> because the tool looks similar. The most common error, and the most invisible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mixing units<\/strong> between the specification, the chart and the gauge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reading pressure on an uncalibrated gauge.<\/strong> The whole chain rests on that needle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forgetting the lubricant.<\/strong> Applied torque and achieved tension are not the same thing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/torque-tension-use-the-right-lubricant\/\">choice of lubricant<\/a> moves the result considerably.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ignoring the sequence.<\/strong> A chart gives a value, not a tightening order. Sequence, progressive passes and cross-checking belong to the assembly method, described notably by ASME PCC-1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why the chart is worthless without calibration<\/h2>\n<p>The chart assumes two things: that the tool delivers what it claims, and that the gauge reads true. Both drift with use.<\/p>\n<p>A gauge knocked around on site can show a distinctly optimistic pressure. You then apply, in good faith, a torque that is not the one in the specification \u2014 and the closeout report will say otherwise. That is why our rental tools leave with their certificate, and why we keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/torque-calibration-aim-right\/\">calibration record<\/a> of every tool that passes through the Longueuil shop.<\/p>\n<p>The practical rule: the torque chart and the calibration certificate are read together. Apart, neither proves much.<\/p>\n<h2>Where to find your tool&#8217;s chart<\/h2>\n<p>Charts and technical data sheets for HYTORC tools are gathered in our <a href=\"https:\/\/cofa.ca\/en\/technical-data-sheets\/\">technical data sheet library<\/a>.
